Cognitive Ergonomics in Interface Design - Discussion of a Moving Science
نویسنده
چکیده
Cognitive Ergonomics is discussed as a systematic base for user interface design. The history of the discipline, explicitly existing now for about 25 years, is discussed, from participatory design, through various flavors of user centered design, to contextual design. Several persistent misunderstandings regarding the need for user interface design are analyzed. The concept of activity centered design is proposed as state of the art approach, and several techniques that support this paradigm are mentioned and illustrated.

Incorporating Cognitive Aspects in Digital Human Modeling
To build software which, at the press of a button, can tell you what cognition related hazards there are within an environment or a task, is probably well into the future if it is possible at all. However, incorporating existing tools such as task analysis tools, interface design guidelines and information about general cognitive limitations in humans, could allow for greater evaluative options...
متن کاملETAG a Formal Model of Competence Knowledge for User Interface Design
This book is about a particular solution to the problem of how to design usable computer systems. Apart from this chapter, it may be read as a short history of the research efforts with respect to ETAG, which is the main subject of the book as well as the tool that is proposed to help create usable computer systems. Since answers are meaningless without the questions they address, this chapter ...
متن کاملThe AMODEUS Project ESPRIT Basic Research Action 7040 EVALUATING NOVEL INTERACTION TECHNOLOGY: SYSTEM AND USER MODELS FOR VR
The objective of ‘virtual reality’ is to provide the user or operator of a system with a sense of interacting directly with some application-oriented world, as opposed to a computer mediated interface to that world. For this to succeed, the design of a VR system must account for both the technical requirements of the given domain, and the cognitive abilities of the user. However, the discipline...
متن کاملInterface Design for Distant Education: Experimenting
This research look at environments for distant learning from a perspective of cognitive ergonomy and computer interface design. We will some studies and systems for distant learning and report on usability evaluation that were done with learners. We will then draw from their limitations some principles of a better adapted interaction and a model for a better interface. Finally ExploraGraph a fr...
متن کاملErgonomic Design Applied in a Sugar Mill Interface
−− In tasks requiring human supervision in an industrial control room there are applied generic disciplines like automatic control and engineering systems. From the point of view of the human computer interaction applied to these disciplines it is necessary to add usability engineering and cognitive ergonomics. This integrated framework is an example of human-centred design on automation system...
